Late yesterday afternoon our younger daughter stopped by for a short visit (with social distancing and masks.) She brought sandwiches for our dinner. As usual, we talked about the grand children. The older one, a boy who will turn 13 the day after tomorrow, has had a year of distance learning and doesn't much like it. He's noticed that the teacher takes on a sugary persona when the session is being recorded, but reverts to normal off camera. When the recording stops temporarily, she'll bark at the students. "You need to sit up straight! You need to pay attention. All eyes should be on me!" When recording resumes, she's all sweetness again.
Tomorrow both children (his sister is six) will return to the classroom two days a week. Our daughter is a little apprehensive about this. She's over fifty, but has not been vaccinated. She doesn't know how many, if any, teachers have been vaccinated. Her husband, who's in the US Army band, has been vaccinated.
We live in a scary world. I hope everyone will be ok.
ReplyDeleteDoes that teacher not realize that parents may be there even if she's not recording? Strange. But some people are just strange. I hope all goes well with the return to school for your grandchildren.

ReplyDeleteYou have to live, but with great caution. Masks and social distancing cannot be done with young children, so you have to hope adults are protecting themselves.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I think it will be wonderful for all when we eventually get to fully return to the classroom.... I think it also needs to be adamantly noted that teachers everywhere generally did an awfully damn good job in terms of converting over to online education with only a few moments notice. It was a very hard, scary, and difficult time for all teachers. And, the VAST majority of teachers tried damn hard to make the online learning environment as good as they could and as comparable as they could to the in-classroom environment. Of course, there were a few bad apples.... but there always are. But... on the whole, I think teachers did an awfully damn good job... given the circumstances.

I don't have a kindle fire, i have a samsugn tablet, but i can't stand reading on that. for 7 years I have read on nothing but kindle paperwite. it is only a reader and has white pages the size of a paper back which is what i read before kindle .. books hurt my hands and i have to have large print and they are really heavy. some people just need to hold a book. I read 2 to 4 hours a day
ReplyDeleteI'm grateful, in a lot of ways, that I am not a parent (or grandparent)of a school aged child right now. I do know some teachers; one of my first cousins once removed teaches in the NYC schools. Some of her students are fully remote and others were hybrid; it's been such a strain on everyone. Going back will be hard, too. I wish them all the best.
