Possible False Negative, But . . .

It's a beautiful snow day here in Maryland. This is our daughter's dog, Mabel. She's a bit porky. She's convinced she is starving. She's adept at grabbing pies on the kitchen counter that the baker thought were well out of reach. Christmas a year ago, our daughter and I spent hours, hours, baking and decorating four dozen fancy sugar cookies for her book club's Christmas cookie exchange. The cookies were hung high up in a bedroom closet, encased in plastic. Mabel helped herself to two dozen. Fortunately for Mabel, I did not learn of this until six months after it happened.

Our grandson--the one who was tested for Covid last Thursday--shares the house with Mabel and his parents. His test came back negative, but then his mother went on line and learned that the test should be given three days after symptoms appear to lower the chances of a false negative. He was probably tested too soon. However, as always seems to be the case with him, he quickly recovered from his cold and feels great again. If it weren't snowing, he'd want to go skateboarding. His dad has the cold now.

  1. Mabel looks slender compared to my sons dog. His Penny is a real porker...lol
Glad to hear your grandson is feeling better. Hope his dad gets over his cold quickly.

    1. I hope so, too, but colds have a way of hanging on to my son-in-law.

  2. I don't know what I would do about a dog that raided food.
I hope your grandson's negative was negative.

    1. I hope so too. As for Mabel, scolding does no good. She just wags her tail.

  3. Sounds like some good news. Even if young people don't have bad symptoms, long term damage is a bit of an unknown.
Strange how some dogs are perpetually starving and others don't take much interest in food.

    1. Perhaps a deprived puppyhood explains Mabel's chronic "starvation." She'a rescue. The agency found her wandering along a country road in West Virginia.

  4. Naughty Mabel, but Clever! I do Hope your Grandson's Negative was indeed a True Negative. We're awaiting our COVID Test Results, we know we were exposed due to our Adult Son Testing Positive... so now it's wait and see and Hope we didn't get Tested too soon? Rapid Results aren't so rapid, so it's a nail-biter not knowing and waiting for our status to be known.

  5. I am hoping the cold was a cold and not the virus and for his dad also... this time of year it could be flu, cold or virus or C19.. it is a wonder it did not make the dog sick from all those cookies. we don't let our dogs have sugar at all, not even a bite. must be like Houdinin to reach it hanging in the closet..

  6. Porky as she is, Mabel is quite agile. She did get sick all over the carpet from eating well over half a chocolate-pecan pie. As far as I know, she suffered no ill effects from the cookies.

  7. How the hell did Mabel get those cookies in the closet? She must be a wizard or something!

    1. She is a wizard, or more likely, a something. Behind that affable, "who-me?" and "sweet-but-clueless" face is the steel-trap mind of a grifter.

  8. If he's over the cold, it probably wasn't COVID. Sending good thoughts.

Gotta watch those clever dogs. They'll find a way to get the treats.

  9. Oh, don't they just? And they wait until you're not watching.

  10. Hopefully if your grandson’s dad is tested, he too will be negative.

On Peppy’s blog you mentioned how food tastes like straw to you due to a medication. Is this even for delicious sweet desserts?!? That would be a real hardship.

I am not sure how you are currently cooking, but perhaps if your appetite is lower, you may want to add more richness (aka. butter) to the things you make to get additional calories? Won’t affect the taste, but you would get more calories with each bite you do eat. I say this, because my wife and I try to make things lower calorie as much as possible, and if you do too.... you might need to go in the opposite direction to get enough calories.

    1. We're thinking maybe dehydration is one of the culprits in addition to the medication. Awhile ago, I did try sneaking in extra butter and olive oil, but unfortunately it didn't work too well.

  12. I hope all turned out well and everyone continued to test negative. I've known several instances of COVID transmittals from children (or grandchildren) to parents. And it's strange how it transmits. In one case, family with six children, both parents but only two of the children tested positive. So hoping these cases were just colds. I don't know much about dog behavior, but a deprived puppyhood does make sense.
